Bruce Kunkel Named Manager of Planning and Space Utilization
The Administrative Division has named Bruce Kunkel '71 as manager of planning and space utilization. In his new role, Kunkel will work closely with the Space Utilization, Management and Allocation Committee (SUMAC) in its mission to manage overall space utilization on campus. The five-member committee was created by President Jackson last year. More

HUD Grant Funds Community Partnership Effort
Rensselaer has received a $400,000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to organize a Community Outreach Partnership Center in the City of Troy. The goal is to revitalize Troy's neighborhoods and infrastructure, promote the use of technology in math and science education, and bridge the "digital divide" through job and technology training. Universities Using Rensselaer Web Site To Teach Electronic Literature
Diana Slattery, associate director of the Academy of Electronic Media at Rensselaer, has combined electronic art, interactive computer game components, sound, and text in a Web-based experimental project called "Glide" that is being used around the country by universities teaching courses in electronic literature. More

Out-of-This-World Construction
Researchers at Rensselaer are studying how novel materials used to build antennas and reflectors for space can be applied to home construction to create economically and environmentally friendly homes and a safer construction site for workers. More

Home Safety and Convenience Tackled in IED Final Presentations
Teams of tired but enthusiastic students demonstrated their final projects for Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) last Friday. The project theme was home safety and convenience, and projects ranged from safe crib designs that monitor a baby's breathing, to stovetops that detect and control fires, to counter tops that automatically clean and disinfect themselves.
