Proteins—Under Pressure!

Fundamental research conducted at Rensselaer on how proteins behave under high pressure is providing insights that could lead to novel engineering and biotechnology applications. Shekhar Garde, assistant professor of chemical engineering, and his graduate student, Tuhin Ghosh, use molecular simulations to investigate effects of high pressure (~5000 atmospheres) on protein structure and the interactions that drive the folding of proteins in water. David Spooner Named Associate Dean for Information Technology
David Spooner, acting chair and professor of computer science, has been named associate dean for information technology. Spooner's research in database systems put him in the forefront of information technology even before it was recognized as a separate discipline.

Growth of Faculty Highlights President's Message
Over the next five or six years, Rensselaer will create more than 100 new faculty positions, said President Jackson at the Nov. 28 meeting of the general faculty. Fifty new professors have been hired this year and 19 of those fill positions that did not exist previously. One-half of the faculty members hired this fall are women or underrepresented minorities. Grant Funds Software That Combines Math and Culture
Rensselaer Professors Ron Eglash and Lester Rubenfeld have received a grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education (FIPSE) to train area school teachers and their students in grades 5 though 12 in the use of new software designed to encourage a multicultural approach to mathematics. Football Players, Coach Honored
The Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) announced its year-end football honors and numerous Rensselaer student-athletes, along with the head coach, were recognized. Among those honored was sophomore quarterback Dan Cole, who was named the Offensive Player of the Year, and Joe King, who was chosen as the Coach of the Year. More

On the Ball: New Coach Heads Women's Basketball Team
Rensselaer's women's basketball squad, which last season won a school-record 23 games (23-5), won the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's 25-year history, has a new head coach. More
