Growth of Faculty Highlights President's
Message
Over the next five or six years, Rensselaer
will create more than 100 new faculty positions, said President
Jackson as she addressed the Nov. 28 meeting of the general
faculty. More than 90 faculty members were present for the
president's presentation, including an additional 11 professors
from Rensselaer at Hartford who participated by video conferencing.

Over the next five or six years, Rensselaer
will create more than 100 new faculty positions, said
President Jackson as she addressed the Nov. 28 meeting

Fifty new professors have been hired this
year and 19 of those fill positions that did not exist previously.
One-half of the faculty members hired this fall are women
or underrepresented minorities.
Jackson reviewed progress in the search
for senior faculty to fill two constellations this year
and four additional constellations in the next two years.
These constellations will help move Rensselaer toward world-class
leadership in biotechnology and information technology research.
To support faculty in expanding the research
portfolio at Rensselaer, the Institute has developed seed
funding for exploratory research, revitalization grants
to strengthen existing research, and a variety of workshops
and seminars, Jackson said.
The Institute also is in the midst of a
comprehensive compensation review as a first step in assuring
that Rensselaer salaries are fair, equitable, and competitive,
Jackson said. Policies governing stipends, tuition, and
fellowships for graduate students are also under review.
"I commend youindividually and
collectivelyfor all that you have done to help our
students and community come through a very difficult fall
semester," said Jackson. "The events of Sept.
11 show us with absolute clarity that the Rensselaer mission
has never been more relevant or important."
