Parking Update

As the new semester begins, major construction and improvements on existing infrastructure and parking on campus continues to swiftly move ahead. Parking gates have been installed in North, West, Academy Hall, AS&RC parking lots, and the Sage Avenue entrance.

Starting soon, the gates will be operated with a transponder system. The Parking Office is awaiting delivery of the transponders that allow gate access. Campus permit holders will be notified when they can pick up transponders, which will be issued by lot.

Until transponders are in place, all gated locations will be staffed by contractual guards Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. to ensure that vehicles have the proper permit for each lot. They will remain posted at these locations until the gates are fully functional.

Returning faculty and staff will be able to park in the same lots as last year. If your parking decal has no expiration date, it will remain valid for 2003-04.

If you are a new employee or if your decal has an expiration date of June 30, 2003, you need to come to the parking office located in the Visitors Center and register your vehicle(s), complete a payroll deduction form, and receive decals that do not expire.

Posts are in place for the installation of additional meters at several campus locations. Installation should be completed by the end of September. New meters will be located at the Visitors Lot, Blaw Knox, and Academy Hall. Temporary parking at a future meter site will be allowed with a valid permit until meter installation is complete. Visitor permits can be obtained at the Visitors Center.

Department hangtags are available for $350 and are valid at any metered space throughout campus when used with a valid Rensselaer parking permit. Persons parking with department hangtags may use future meter locations.

The campus Red Hawk Shuttle from the Field House will operate Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The downtown Hedley Red Hawk Shuttle will operate Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The RPI 86 CDTA shuttle will continue to offer full service to campus. For further information on the Red Hawk and CDTA shuttle bus service, go to www.pt.rpi.edu.

Pedestrian and Traffic Restrictions
Construction continues on the South Campus. To ensure pedestrian safety and minimize vehicle traffic primarily within the area bordered by 15th Street and College Avenue, the following parking and pedestrian advisories and restrictions are in effect:

* No pedestrian access to campus is available from College Avenue or from the Academy Hall parking lot. Public Safety urges all pedestrians to use the east sidewalk of 15th Street and the pedestrian overpass near the Visitor's Center to access the core campus. A temporary crosswalk will be installed across 15th Street to provide access to Academy Hall.

* At end of August and the first week of September, and again in mid-September, Service Gate B, off College Avenue near 13th Street, will be closed except to construction and emergency vehicles. All other vehicles (provided they have proper permits) are to enter campus via the 8th Street or Sage Avenue entrances until all work has been completed on College Avenue. Completion is expected in late fall. The new Gate C (toward 8th Street) will be opened as a detour route for deliveries into campus.

* The Academy Hall parking lots are open. Only Academy Hall permit holders will be allowed to park there.

* Credit Union members and other visitors to West Hall can park at the meters outside the gates to West Lot.

For more information on parking restrictions and alternate routes, contact Parking and Transportation at ext. 6616. Or visit the Web site at http://www.pt.rpi.edu/. For a map of traffic restrictions, go to http://www.rpi.edu/dept/gov/construct/expect.html#Anchor-49575.
