New Course Delves Into Business Side of Biotechnology
This fall, Rensselaer students will have a new opportunity to round out the scientific side of their education with a class that delves into the business of biotechnology. Seniors and graduate students interested in taking biomedical developments from lab experiment to product launch will benefit from a course that focuses on the business, regulatory, and ethical issues that are all part of the biotech and medical device industries.
We want to expose students interested in biotechnology and bioengineering to some of the key product development issues in these fields.

Professors Shreefal Mehta, research assistant professor of biotechnology management, and Jan Stegemann, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, are co-leading the course, called Commercializing Biomedical Technology. The class meetings will include background lectures, and will also feature case studies and in-class discussions.
We want to expose students interested in biotechnology and bioengineering to some of the key product development issues in these fields, said Stegemann. To that end, a variety of guest lecturers with industry experience will be invited to share their stories with the class.
The perspectives that students will gain from the course should help them handle the development and business commercialization pressures that are part of highly regulated biomedical industry environment. Our aim is to better prepare students to steer their work and their careers toward a successful experience, said Mehta.
