2007: A Record-Breaking Class

The Class of 2007 has just arrived and it is already breaking records. This year’s incoming class represents record highs not only in the overall number of students, but also in the number of women, legacies, and Rensselaer Medalists.

“The Class of 2007 is an affirmation of the renaissance taking place at Rensselaer,” President Shirley Ann Jackson said. “Our campus has experienced unprecedented growth and renewal, which has drawn a record number of bright, diverse, and capable students poised to create bold visions for an increasingly complex world.”

Teresa Duffy, dean of enrollment management, attributes the top enrollment figures to Rensselaer’s revitalization efforts to enhance the academic environment and provide the best quality of life for its students.

“Exciting changes are happening at Rensselaer, and more and more students want to be a part of that excitement,” Duffy said. “Students from around the country — and globally — clearly see what Rensselaer is doing to ensure their education for a secure and fulfilling future as new buildings go up, new faculty arrive, and new research gets under way.”

Rensselaer’s initiatives include building a new Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, which is expected to open in fall 2004. Rensselaer also is building an experimental media and performing arts center (EMPAC) that will support and extend student creativity, research, and learning. And, many students are moving into recently renovated residence halls, part of a $32 million effort in renovations and upgrades to student-life programs, campus facilities, and classrooms.

The Class of 2007 consists of 1,356 freshmen. Of those students, 325 are women, 315 are Rensselaer Medalists, 220 are from outside the Northeast, and 88 are legacies (students who are related to Rensselaer alumni) — record highs for each of these groups.

The class also reflects Rensselaer’s continuing efforts to create a more diverse student body. The number of minority students is up 29 percent from last year.
