Elizabeth Large, director of student services
in humanities and social sciences, received the 2002 Pillars of
Rensselaer Award, the highest honor Rensselaer gives to a staff
member. The award was presented at the 30th Annual Service Recognition
& Retirement Dinner Aug. 2 at The Desmond. The Pillars Award
is presented annually to a staff member who understands the Institute's
mission and history, has been a role model for other employees,
has showed concern for students and their welfare, has added to
the human dimension of the school, and who has played an active
role in his or her home community.
The many people who nominated Large cited her
caring attitude toward students, her willingness to go "above
and beyond," and her involvement in events such as Discover
Day, Medal Day, Accepted Students' Day, Student Orientation, and
the First Year Experience, said Chief of Staff Cynthia McIntyre,
who announced the Pillars Award winner.
Large also was honored for her volunteer roles
in campus events including Commencement and Honors Convocation,
and her annual participation in the American Heart Walk.
In 1993, Carl Westerdahl, former dean of students
and director of alumni relations, provided the funding to establish
the Pillars of Rensselaer Award to honor long-term staff members.
The annual award consists of a gift of $500 and a sterling silver
pin by Tiffany & Co. The winner's name is inscribed on the
base of the Tiffany crystal award and is permanently displayed
in the President's Suite in the Troy Building.
The Pillars are regularly called upon by the president
to represent the staff in key decisions. They also help to plan
staff recognition and memorial events.
