Accolades: August19, 2002

Peping Dee, a graduate student in the Lighting Research Center's M.S. in lighting program, has won a $3,000 scholarship from the International Association of Lighting Designers Education Trust Fund. These scholarships support students pursuing architectural lighting design as a course of study. Applicants are judged on grades, extracurricular activities, an essay about a personal experience with lighting, and supporting artwork. Dee's essay discusses light as an architect's tool and how he hopes one day to integrate architecture and lighting into a single practice. 8/12/02

Faye Duchin, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of economics, gave a lecture titled "Economic Development in the 21st Century" to the North American Youth Science Leadership Institute in the Monongahela National Forest, Elkins, West Virginia, July 30. The Institute is a two-week intensive immersion in science and leadership for 75 young scientists from the United States, Mexico, and Canada. 8/12/02

Lighting Research Center (LRC) staff members presented six papers at the recent International Society for Optical Engineering conference on solid-state lighting, held July 9-11 in Seattle, Wash. Nadarajah Narendran, director of research, and Lei Deng presented "Color Rendering Index for LED Light Sources"; Ramesh Raghavan and Narendran presented "Refrigerated Display Case Lighting with LEDs"; Insya Shakir and Narendran presented "Evaluating White LEDs for Outdoor Lighting Applications"; John Van Derlofske, head of transportation lighting, and Michele McColgan presented "White LED Sources for Vehicle Forward Lighting"; Feng Zhao, Narendran, and Van Derlofske presented "Optical Elements for Mixing Colored LEDs to Create White Light"; and Patricia Rizzo, Andrew Bierman, and LRC Director Mark Rea presented "Color and Brightness Discrimination of White LEDs." 8/12/02

Rensselaer's Human Resources division was one of five selected by the College University Personnel Association (CUPA-HR) task force as an example of effective best practices throughout higher education. Rensselaer was noted for its innovative Performance Management Tool. The other four institutions were Dallas County Community College, Florida State University, University of Georgia, and Virginia Commonwealth University. 8/12/02
