In past years, the "Welcome Festival"
has attracted crowds of 1,500 to 2,000 people, according
to Cynthia Smith, assistant dean in the Office of the First
Year Experience, and she expects an even larger turnout
this year. So far, Rensselaer a cappella groups the Rusty
Pipes and Rensselyrics, along with the Canada-based Nylons,
have signed on to perform. Numerous city businesses and
organizations will set up booths, offer coupons, hang welcome
banners in windows, and stay open late on the day of the
festival. The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, for example,
plans to staff a tent and offer giveaways, information,
schedules, and tickets to future performances.
