Organized by the Office of the First Year Experience, the "Communiversity" event will familiarize attendees with downtown business and culture — and provide them with a little refreshment and entertainment at the same time.

Rensselaer will host a "Welcome Festival" on Friday, Aug. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. in Troy's Monument Square. The event is free and open to the Rensselaer community, including incoming freshmen, graduate students, new employees, and neighbors.

In past years, the "Welcome Festival" has attracted crowds of 1,500 to 2,000 people, according to Cynthia Smith, assistant dean in the Office of the First Year Experience, and she expects an even larger turnout this year. So far, Rensselaer a cappella groups the Rusty Pipes and Rensselyrics, along with the Canada-based Nylons, have signed on to perform. Numerous city businesses and organizations will set up booths, offer coupons, hang welcome banners in windows, and stay open late on the day of the festival. The Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, for example, plans to staff a tent and offer giveaways, information, schedules, and tickets to future performances.

Smith emphasizes that the Welcome Festival's real objective is to acquaint new students to the area and vice versa. Anyone connected to the Rensselaer community is invited.

"The annual event welcomes an additional 1,500 new people to town, so we hope this gives them a better understanding and appreciation of what Troy is about and helps them realize all that it has to offer," Smith said.
