Joseph Smith Dies
Joseph Smith '45, who retired from Rensselaer
in 1991 as assistant dean and associate professor of electrical,
computer, and systems engineering, died Aug. 5. He was 77.
Smith had a 40-year career at Rensselaer
and was instrumental in the development of the pre-engineering
program. He received many honors during career, including
the Sun and Balance Award of the Newman Foundation, the
Darrin Counseling Award, the Alumni Excellence Award, and
election to Phalanx. Smith was a Navy veteran of World War
II.
Smith received a bachelor's degree in 1945
and a master's (1954), both in electrical engineering from
Rensselaer.
