Institute
Professor of Science Ivar Giaever '64 and Charles
Keese '71, senior research scientist in biology, have
their patented ECIS 100 (Electric Cell-substrate Impedance Sensing)
device featured in the July 2001 issue of Biomedicalproducts.
ECIS is an electronic petri dish that provides online, computer-guided
analysis of living cells. The system has been used exclusively
to monitor the activities of living cells using electric fields
too weak to be detected by the cells. In the newer version advertised
in the magazine, a module has been added that uses high electric
fields to deliberately alter the cells. 8/6/01
