“Open Forum on the War in Iraq” April 9 The School of Humanities and Social Sciences will host an “Open Forum on the War in Iraq” on Wednesday, April 9, from 7-9 p.m. in room 3303 of the Sage Laboratory. The forum is aimed at students interested in discussing their questions and concerns about the conflict and its implications. The forum is designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to briefly frame some of the key historical and current issues of the conflict, and for students to speak to the issues with faculty facilitating the discussions. “After speaking with students and student life representatives about their interests in having an opportunity to discuss the implications of the war for their country and for themselves, it was clear that students want both information and an opportunity to talk out the issues with each other and with faculty in a mutual effort of clarification,” explained H&SS Dean John Harrington. “Equally clearly, students were of the opinion that they wanted to explore all sides of the questions of the war.” For further information contact Don Moore at ext. 2992 or moored@rpi.edu. 4/7/03

Senior Class Gift Campaign Challenges Union College The Class of 2003 is participating in a fund-raising challenge with its counterparts at Union College. The goal of the campaign is the highest class participation. Rensselaer is striving for 25 percent class participation or 325 seniors. Gifts may be paid over a two-year period. The senior class gift campaign is seeking to raise money for the Rensselaer Annual Fund, which helps to support student activities, research and innovation, scholarship, and entrepreneurship. “This is just one way that the Class of 2003 can show its support for the groundbreaking changes happening at Rensselaer,” said Rick Hartt ’70, director of the Rensselaer Union. “The objective of this program is to show seniors the impact that philanthropy has had on them, as well as to give them the opportunity to carry on the tradition of supporting their alma mater.” For more information on the senior class gift campaign, go to www.alumni.rpi.edu/mad/as_2003.html. 4/7/03

Rensselaer United Way Contributions Continue to Grow Rensselaer’s 2002 United Way campaign closed in December. This year’s effort was a tremendous success, generating a total of $125,000 in donations from Rensselaer employees. The campaign was coordinated by Cynthia McIntyre, chief of staff, Cindy Novak of the Provost’s Office, Barbara Stubblebine from the School of Architecture, and Lu Uber from the Office of the Vice President for Research. Committee members included Anne Bilynsky, Bonnie Carson, Tracey DiScanio, JoAnn Drost, Barbara Dzembo, Denise Elwell, Phylis Federici, Traci Griffin, Vicki Messick, Mauvorneen Roy, Cynthia Smith, Tanya Struzinsky, and Lori Winslow. “The campaign’s effectiveness is due in large part to the active participation of over 80 volunteers representing every administrative and academic unit on campus,” says McIntyre. Over the past three years these volunteers have helped Rensselaer increase its United Way donations by 34 percent, boosting the total contribution from $94,000 to $125,000. The number of employees participating and their individual donations has also grown each year. 3/24/03
