RAA Fellows Award: James Collins '77

James Collins ’77 will be recognized with the Rensselaer Alumni Association (RAA) Fellows Award from the School of Architecture on Monday, April 28, when Collins visits campus for the School of Architecture Advisory Council activities. Collins received a bachelor’s in building science from Rensselaer in 1977, a bachelor’s of architecture degree in 1978, and a master’s in management in 1978, all from Rensselaer.

Rensselaer Alumni Association (RAA)Collins is president and CEO of Payette Associates. Founded in 1932 as Markus & Nocka, with an emphasis on the design of health-care facilities, the firm was renamed Payette Associates in 1974 and enlarged its practice to include work for colleges and universities, schools of medicine and health, and corporations. Collins joined Payette in 1979, becoming partner in 1984. In 1998, he was named president of the firm.

Collins is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a member of the Boston Society of Architects. At Rensselaer, he is a member of the School of Architecture Advisory Board and a member of the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center External Advisors Committee. He is also the creator of the Payette Associates Fellowship in the School of Architecture.

The RAA Fellows Award was created in the fall of 1987 to honor those alumni or non-alumni of Rensselaer who, by their achievements in a chosen profession or endeavor or by their service to the Institute, have set an example for Rensselaer men and women to emulate. To date, 113 RAA Fellows Awards have been presented.
