Community Service Day April 16

Rensselaer will hold the fifth annual Community Service Day on Wednesday, April 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students, staff, and faculty can take part in various service activities at more than a dozen sites in and around Troy. This year, a goal of 1,000 volunteer hours has been set.

All employees who receive prior approval from their supervisors to volunteer for Community Service Day during work hours will receive their regular hourly wage for the time period they in which they volunteer for. Lecture on “Key Trends in Information Technology” April 18

The Office of Research is sponsoring a distinguished lecture by Paul Horn, senior vice president and director of research for IBM, who will speak on “Key Trends in Information Technology” on Friday, April 18 at 4 p.m. in the CII 4050.

Horn began his 22-year career with IBM as a solid-state physicist, followed by several key management positions in science, semiconductors, and storage. He currently is responsible for IBM's worldwide research program, with 3,200 technical employees in eight sites located around the world in five countries. During his tenure at IBM, he has been a champion for translating technology-based research in to marketplace opportunity.

Horn is a fellow of the American Physical Society, a National Science Foundation graduate fellow, and was an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow from 1974-1978. He is a former associate editor of Physical Review Letters and has published more than 85 scientific and technical papers. In1988, he received the Bertram Eugene Warren Award from the American Crystallographic Association. 4/14/03

Rensselaer Professor Explores “Musical Madness” at Junior Museum April 24

The Junior Museum of Troy is hosting special educational camps during the April break from local elementary schools. Ron Eglash, assistant professor of science and technology studies at Rensselaer, will take part in the “Musical Madness” session on Thursday, April 24 at 11 a.m. Eglash will discuss "Computers, Drums, and Math: What's the Connection?" The session is aimed at children ages 4 to 8 years old.

EMAC Seniors Exhibit Capstone Projects

Graduating seniors in the electronic media, arts, and communication (EMAC) program will hold a capstone exhibition of their final projects in the Heffner Alumni House April 25-26. The exhibition will showcase work in video, Web design, animation, multimedia installation, graphic design, electronic music, painting, and sculpture. It is free and open to the public.

An opening reception will be held Friday, April 25 from 4 to 9 p.m. The show will also be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Call for WMHT AUCTION Volunteers

Rensselaer is again sponsoring a segment on local PBS station WMHT's 2003 Great TV Auction. Volunteers are needed Saturday, May 3, from 2 to 6:30 pm. to answer phones and to run bids in the studio. Approximately 120 volunteers are needed.

Volunteers will receive a Rensselaer T-shirt for participating. Those who volunteer should plan to be at the WMHT studio in Rotterdam for the entire shift. For more information or to volunteer, contact Pat Haywood at ext. 2750 or haywop@rpi.edu. 4/14/03

Commencement Volunteers Sought

The Office of University Events is still in need of volunteers for Rensselaer’s 197th Commencement exercises. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 17, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Harkness Field. Senior Class Gift Campaign Challenges Union College

The Class of 2003 is participating in a fund-raising challenge with its counterparts at Union College. The goal of the campaign is the highest class participation. Rensselaer is striving for 25 percent class participation or 325 seniors. Gifts may be paid over a two-year period.

The senior class gift campaign is seeking to raise money for the Rensselaer Annual Fund, which helps to support student activities, research and innovation, scholarship, and entrepreneurship.

“This is just one way that the Class of 2003 can show its support for the groundbreaking changes happening at Rensselaer,” said Rick Hartt ’70, director of the Rensselaer Union. “The objective of this program is to show seniors the impact that philanthropy has had on them, as well as to give them the opportunity to carry on the tradition of supporting their alma mater.”

All-Sports Camp Contest

The athletics department is holding a drawing for two free weeks of its 2003 Instructional All-Sports Camp to employees of Rensselaer and their children. The camp, for boys and girls ages 7 to 13, features six weekly sessions starting June 23 through Aug. 1. Two winners each will receive a free first week of camp.

To enter the drawing, contact Brian Surace, camp director, at suracb@rpi.edu with your name, e-mail address, and campus phone extension. Each employee of Rensselaer can sign up once. The drawing will be held Tuesday, April 15, and the winners will be contacted individually. Call for Presentations: Rensselaer Colloquium on Teaching and Learning

The Provost's Office is sponsoring an end-of-year colloquium on teaching and learning on May 12-13. They are looking for faculty members interested in sharing their latest innovations or experiences in teaching with other faculty. They also are looking for suggestions for panel sessions where faculty might gather to discuss topics of common interests. Topics can be on anything related to teaching here at Rensselaer.
