Rensselaer To Honor Four Celebrated Individuals at Commencement

Four individuals from varied fields of accomplishment will be honored at Rensselaer's 196th Commencement on Saturday, May 18. Rensselaer will bestow honorary degrees on filmmaker Bobby Farrelly '81, genome scientist Claire Fraser '77, Brown University President Ruth Simmons, and civilian space traveler and successful businessman Dennis Tito '64. Tito will be the featured speaker.

Bobby Farrelly

Bobby Farrelly '81, who will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters, is a successful writer, director, and producer of comedy movies along with his brother, Peter. Their 1998 hit There's Something About Mary earned more than $350 million worldwide and garnered several awards. Other movies include Dumb and Dumber; Me, Myself, and Irene; Osmosis Jones; and, most recently, Shallow Hal.

Claire Fraser

A pioneer in comparative genomics, Claire Fraser '77 (Honorary Doctorate of Science) is the president and director of The Institute of Genomic Research (TIGR) and one of Newsweek's "10 to

Watch for 2002." She also is professor of pharmacology and professor of microbiology and tropical medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine.

Ruth SimmonsRuth Simmons (Honorary Doctorate of Engineering) is the 18th president of Brown University and holds appointments as professor in the Department of Comparative Literature and the Department of Africana Studies. She served as president of Smith College from 1995 to 2001, during which time the college established the first engineering program at a woman's college.

Dennis TitoDennis Tito '64 (Honorary Doctorate of Engineering) is a successful entrepreneur who recently received international recognition as the first tourist aboard the International Space Station. Tito is the founder and chief executive of Wilshire Associates, one of the largest investment management consulting firms in the U.S. In 1974, Tito developed the Wilshire Total Market Index (The Wilshire 5000), which Federal Reserve officials cite as a barometer of the U.S. economy.

Commencement 2002 marks the return of graduation ceremonies to the Rensselaer campus. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the Harkness Field. Festive Celebration Picnics immediately following the ceremony will be held at various sites around the main campus.
