Flagpole Dedication to Honor WWII Heroes

Rensselaer will hold a flagpole dedication
at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, in memory of two local World
War II heroes, Lt. Colonel William J. O'Brien and Sergeant
Thomas Baker. The event, held at the Doris B. Robison Field,
will coincide with the opening day of Little League baseball.

The ceremony will begin with a Little League
parade that will march from Beman Park to the field on Fifteenth
Street, where Eddie Knowles, vice president for student
life at Rensselaer, will welcome guests. Knowles will introduce
VFW member Robert Reiter, who will recount the history of
Baker and O'Brien.
Baker and O'Brien, Army comrades in the
105th Infantry, 27th Infantry Division, earned the Medal
of Honor for their heroism during the 1944 Battle of Saipan
in World War II.
