Frisbee-Throwing Competition Marks IED
Final Presentation
More than 280 students in Introduction
to Engineering Design, a sophomore-level design course,
are putting the finishing touches on their Frisbee-throwing
machines for a target competition on the last day of classes.
The event will take place on Wednesday,
May 1, from 4 to 8:30 p.m. in the Alumni Sports and Recreation
Center (Armory). Members of the campus community are encouraged
to attend.
The machines will throw Frisbees, donated
by Wham-O, at three different targets to earn points. Winners
of this competition hope to compete at the American Society
of Engineering Education annual meeting in Montreal, Canada,
this June.
Teams had to build the machines with specific
requirements in mind, including incorporating engineering
skills from more than one engineering discipline. They also
were encouraged to consider other factors in the design
of the machine, such as energy conservation, use of recycled
materials, and safety.
