Site Work Begins on South Campus;
Parking Restrictions in Some Lots
In preparation for the start of new construction on the south campus, Hartgen Archeological Associates have begun Phase 2 site exploration in Parking Lot 20. Hartgen will perform artifact recovery and documentation in the lot, due west of the Gate House, where worker housing existed in the 19th century. Approximately 15 to 20 parking spaces will be lost as this process begins. The balance of Lot 20 will be closed after May 3. The lots south of Cogswell (Lots 21B, 21A, and 18) will be closed after May 20.

McCarthy Construction will commence with minor roadwork on or about May 3, including grading of a new temporary lot and staging area west of Lot 23. Approximately 10 parking spots will be temporarily lost until the new lot becomes available in mid-May.

Students Present Playwrights' Festival
On Thursday, April 25, and Monday, April 29, Rensselaer will present the first Playwrights' Festival, a festival of short plays written by students. The performances will take place in Mother's (lower level of the Student Union) at 6 p.m. both nights. Admission is free and open to the public. Material for the playwright's festival was developed by students in the class Playwriting and Production, taught by Paulina Shur, clinical associate art professor, in spring 2001. From 80 short plays written throughout the semester by 20 students, 19 will be performed by members of the Theatre Performance class. Colloquium on Teaching and Learning
The Provost's Office will sponsor its second annual end-of-year colloquium on teaching and learning on May 13-14. This year's colloquium will focus on connecting the latest research on assessing student learning with classroom practice. Through a combination of talks and hands-on workshops, participating faculty will benefit from up-to-date summaries of cutting-edge research on assessment, practical experience on integrating assessment with instruction, and examples of best practices among Rensselaer faculty. Reception To Honor Ed Rogers
The Computer Science Department is holding a reception to honor Edwin H. Rogers, professor of computer science and math, on the occasion of his retirement. The reception will take place Friday, April 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Heffner Alumni House.

Call for WMHT AUCTION Volunteers
Rensselaer is again sponsoring a segment on local PBS station WMHT's 2002 Great TV Auction. Volunteers are needed Saturday, April 27, from 1:30 to 6:30 pm. to answer phones and to run bids in the studio. Approximately 120 volunteers are needed.

Volunteers will receive a Rensselaer T-shirt and will be fed by WMHT during the shift. Those who volunteer should plan to be at the WMHT studio in Rotterdam for the entire shift. For more information or to volunteer, contact Lynda Holt at ext. 8192 or holtl@rpi.edu. 4/15/02

Save the Date: MDL Open House
The campus is invited to the grand opening and dedication of the Haas Technical Center and O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory in the Jonsson Engineering Center on Tuesday, April 30. An open house will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a formal presentation and ribbon cutting at 11 a.m.

The dedication celebrates Rensselaer's partnership with Haas Factory Outlet and Haas Automation, which has established 30 technical centers at schools throughout the United States "to enable engineering students to maximize individual opportunities for growth and exploration by placing the tools they need at their disposal."

The open house will include displays of student projects; demonstrations will be held from noon until 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served, and RSVPs are appreciated at madigs@rpi.edu. 4/8/02
