National Alliance Applauds Arts Department
at Rensselaer
The National Alliance for Media Arts and
Culture (NAMAC) conducted an in-depth analysis of Rensselaer's
Arts Department, calling it a "highly creative and
enterprising digital arts department" that is "changing
the face of public media in the United States."
"The Arts Department at RPI operates
more like an entrepreneurial Web-design company in the
post-industrial economy than a slow-as-molasses, traditional
academic department of the old economy. Although the
faculty represent enormously different disciplines (electronic
music, painting, media production, Internet art, critical
studies), they share a commitment to change and innovation."

The NAMAC's review of Rensselaer was part
of its annual study, A Closer Look 2001, that provides
seven in-depth case-study essays that explore a wide range
of issues facing nonprofit media arts organizations.
"The Arts Department at RPI operates
more like an entrepreneurial Web-design company in the post-industrial
economy than a slow-as-molasses, traditional academic department
of the old economy," the study states. "Although
the faculty represent enormously different disciplines (electronic
music, painting, media production, Internet art, critical
studies), they share a commitment to change and innovation."
In its 10-page analysis of Rensselaer's
Arts Department, the study reviews the department's history,
accomplishments, and goals.
"Virtually no other academic unit in
the United States resembles it," the study adds. "The
curriculum has grown at an unprecedented pace, responding
to students, the marketplace, and changing public-media
and arts-practice landscapes."
