Thierry Blanchet, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, served as chair for the American Society of Mechanical Engineers/Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (ASME/STLE) 2004 International Joint Tribology Conference held recently in Long Beach, Calif. The conference program included sessions on engineered surfaces, nanotribology, and magnetic storage tribology. Dan Fridgen, head coach of the men's varsity hockey team, marked his 187th victory Oct. 30 at a 5-0 shutout over Mercyhurst College. The victory makes Fridgen, who is in his 11th year, the winningest coach in Rensselaer history (187-156-31). Huatong Sun, a recent language, literature, and communication department Ph.D. graduate, received the "Best Thesis" award from the Localization Research Centre in Limerick, Ireland, for her dissertation "Expanding the Scope of Localization: A Cultural Usability Perspective on Mobile Text Messaging Use in American and Chinese Contexts." The award included a EUR1000 prize and travel support to present her work at the LRC Localization Conference in Limerick. John Tichy, chair and professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Dedicated Service Award. It honors dedicated voluntary service to the society marked by outstanding performance, demonstrated effective leadership, prolonged and committed service, devotion, enthusiasm, and faithfulness, according to ASME. He received the award at the ASME/STLE 2004 International Joint Tribology Conference. James Watt, chair and professor of language, literature, and communication, received an $80,000 NSF grant, in conjunction with TouchGraphics of New York City, for the project "SBIR Phase II: Creating Accessible Science Museums for Blind and Visually Impaired Visitors With User-Activated Audio Beacons." Watt also initiated the second year of an audio/tactile statistics curriculum project, "A Model for Enhancing Graphical Learning for Students with Print Disabilities," funded by the Fund for the Improvement of Post-Secondary Education. The project is a collaboration with Baruch College, City University of New York. Both projects will be conducted in the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory. |
