The Office of the First-Year Experience (FYE) has been honored recently for several of its publications. At the 2004 NACA (National Association for Campus Activities) Mid Atlantic Regional Conference, held Oct. 17-20 in Baltimore, FYE earned two awards in the "School Member Publicity — Professionally Designed, Theme Publicity" categories. And at the 2004 NODA (National Orientation Directors Association) National Conference Oct. 29-Nov. 1 in Chicago, FYE was honored for "Outstanding Use of Theme" (Student Orientation 2004) and "Outstanding Welcome Week Publicity" (Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond 2004 publications and related items).
Georges Belfort, the Russell Sage Professor of Chemical Engineering, gave a plenary presentation titled "Why Fundamental Science Matters in Advancing Membrane Technology" on Oct. 17 at a symposium held in honor of scientist Ora Kedem at Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.
Iftekhar Hasan, acting dean of the Lally School and editor of The Journal of Financial Stability, chaired a panel on "Exploring Relationships Between Firms' Balance Sheets and the Macro Economy" at the Regulations and Financial Stability Conference sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and The Journal of Financial Stability Sept. 23-24 in Atlanta.
