B. Wayne Bequette, professor of chemical and biological engineering, has been elected vice president (president-elect) of the American Automatic Control Council (AACC) for 2006-7, and will become president in 2008-9. The American Automatic Control Council is an association of the control systems divisions of eight member societies, and is the U.S. National Member Organization of the International Federation of Automatic Control. A primary responsibility of the AACC is to sponsor, organize, and run the annual American Control Conference. Bequette served as the general chair of the 2003 American Control Conference in Denver. He is also the vice chair of the Computing and Systems Technology division of AIChE, and will become chair in 2006.

Antoine Harrison, technical director of the Language, Literature and Communication department in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and Michael Moore Jr., associate dean and director of minority recruitment, were honored as Capital District YMCA Black and Latino Achievers at the second annual Black and Latino Achievers Awards Gala on June 17. According to the organization, the Capital District YMCA’s Black and Latino Achiever’s program reaches into the community by matching adult achievers with African American and Latino youth pursuing higher education and career goals. The award is given to youth and adults whose dedication, excellence and interest in the program, and individual achievements bring a positive influence to the community. In addition, Harrison received the Rotary Club of Troy 2005 Unsung Hero Award during a luncheon held by the organization on June 16. The award is given to individuals based on their contributions to the community, youth, leadership, and volunteerism.

Cynthia Smith, assistant dean in the Office of the First-Year Experience, has been appointed to the New York Campus Compact Advisory Committee beginning July 2005 for a two-year term. Candidates for the committee are “selected based on their ability to contribute to the Compact’s growth and success.” Smith coordinates several community service and service learning initiatives for the campus community, including monthly Community Service Days and tutoring for children in the Troy schools.

Rensselaer student-athlete Pat Fell, a swimmer, has been selected to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine National Academic All-America Men's At-Large First Team. Fell has been named a National Academic All-American in each of the past three years, the first Rensselaer student-athlete to be honored three times. A senior from Waverly, N.Y., Fell has a 3.96 cumulative grade point average as an information technology major with a concentration in finance. In the pool, Fell was a three-year captain who led the team in scoring twice. This season, he was the Liberty League Swimmer of the Week on two occasions and he helped the Red Hawks win the league championship. The team's Rookie of the Year in 2001-02, he holds six school records.

Rensselaer student-athletes Joe Otto, Trevor Tersmette, and Sharath Alampur have been selected as ESPN The Magazine National Academic All-Americans in the college division of men's track & field/cross country, as selected by CoSIDA. Otto and Tersmette are both First Team honorees,while Alampur was chosen to the Third Team. A senior from West Seneca, N.Y., Otto has a 3.82 grade point average in electrical engineering with a minor in economics. This past indoor season, he earned National All-American honors in the 800-meter run for the second straight season after finishing sixth at the NCAA Meet. In outdoors, Otto helped the 4x400 relay team to victory in the state meet and he was runner-up in the 800-meter run. Tersmette, a senior from Barneveld, N.Y., is an aeronautical engineering and mechanical engineering dual major who has a cumulative GPA of 3.89.  On the track, he earned National All-American in the outdoor decathlon, finishing fifth overall with a school record 6,750 points. Alampur, a graduate student, has a 3.55 grade point average as a Ph.D. mathematics student. He finished his undergraduate degree of mathematics, along with three minors, with a 3.93 GPA. He has won multiple league and state titles in the triple jump, helping the Engineers to four straight New York State Championships.
