| Arthur Bergles, the Clark and Crossan Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, was recently elected fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He received this distinction for his work in improving process heat exchangers and for his service to the Institute, most recently as a director of the Transport and Energy Processes Division. Rensselaer junior Oren Eizenman (Toronto, ON) was recently named the Most Outstanding Forward after leading Israel to victory at the men's hockey third-tier level national tournament in Belgrade. Eizenman, a management major, led all tournament scorers with 10 goals, including three game-winners and four assists for 14 points for Israel, which posted a 4-0-1 record. With the tournament title, Israel moves from Division II to Division I in the International Ice Hockey Federation(IIHF). Achille Messac, professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, recently served as chair of the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Technical Committee (TC) of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and as general chair of two major international AIAA conferences. He was recently recognized in Austin, Texas, and received an award for "Outstanding Service to the AIAA MDO TC 2004-2005." The full text of the award reads "Professor Achille Messac served with distinction as general chair of the 2004 Multidisciplinary Analysis & Optimization (MAO) conference in Albany, NY. This MAO Conference turned out to be the most successful so far in terms of number of participants, papers reviewed and presented, and international participation. During the preparation of the conference, Achille demonstrated excellent managerial skills as exemplified by the way he managed the numerous interactions between AIAA, authors, reviewers, industry, and co-chairs across multiple time-zones and disciplines. Achille Messac's outstanding leadership leaves MDO as one of the most vibrant and active TC's in AIAA today." Michael Shur, the Patricia W. and C. Sheldon Roberts '48 Chaired Professor in Solid-State Electronics, was a lead organizer of a symposium titled "Giant Area Electronics on Non-conventional Substrates" of the Materials Research Society Spring Conference in San Francisco (March 27-31). Highlights of the symposium included reports of 100 square kilometer worldwide solar cell production, including roll-to-roll solar cells on lexibel substrates, Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) on steel foil, OLED lifetimes over 100,000 hours, and reports on organic RFID tags. |
