Accolades: Week of October 8, 2001

Brian Bradke, a junior in biomedical engineering, recently represented the Northeast region in the inaugural USA off-road triathlon championships in Lake Tahoe. Bradke, who competed alongside more than 100 other professional and amateur athletes from France, Australia, and the USA, was named national champion and qualified for the World Championships in Maui. 10/8/01

Alan Balfour, dean of architecture, has been invited to be a scholar in residence at the American Academy in Rome. Officially a "Director's Guest," Balfour also will work on a book project he's developing. With the working title "Reality and the Need to Know God," Balfour's project is based on St. Augustine's attitude to Rome in his work City of God. Balfour will be in Rome from November through January, and again for the month of March. 10/8/01


Sal Restivo, professor of science and technology studies, has been appointed the Hixon/Riggs Visiting Professor of Science, Technology, and Society at Harvey Mudd College for 2002-03. 9/24/01

Mukkai Krishnamoorthy, associate professor of computer science, wrote an article about LOGML for the September issue of ZapLetter, a monthly newsletter offering research and analysis on Extensible Markup Language (XML). LOGML was created by John Punin, a Ph. D. student in computer science under Krishnamoorthy. The article also describes the Web usage-mining effort of Punin, Krishnamoorthy, and Mohammed Zaki using LOGML. 9/24/01

Paul Winters, director of the Rensselaer Learning Institute at Rensselaer at Hartford, was elected to a three-year term on the board of directors for the Hartford-based National Theatre of the Deaf . The mission of the NTD includes performing original works in a style that links American Sign Language with the spoken word; seeking, training, and employing deaf artists; offering its work to as culturally diverse and inclusive an audience as possible; and providing community outreach activities that educate and enlighten the general public. RLI is a department within Rensselaer at Hartford that offers corporate training programs and services in the areas of leadership and executive development, computer information technology, and technical and professional development. 9/24/01
