Frontiers
in Information Technology Symposia
Two "Frontiers in Information Technology" symposia,
hosted by the IT Constellation Search Committee, are scheduled
for November. The symposia are being held to more fully inform
the campus and local industry people about information technology,
a major component of the Rensselaer Plan.
The
first symposium, "Future Chips: Revolutionary Computing and
Leapfrog Device Technologies," will be held Friday, Nov.
2, 8:30 a.m.- 3:30 p.m., in room 4050 of the Low Center for Industrial
Innovation. The second one, titled "Multiscale Computation:
Simulation and Modeling That Is Changing the Face of Scientific
and Engineering Inquiry," will be held Thursday, Nov. 8,
9 a.m.- 6 p.m. also in room 4050 of the Low Center.
Preregistration
is required for the symposia. A buffet lunch will be served. For

Director Rita Colwell Among the Honorees at Honors Convocation
NSF Director Rita Colwell will receive an honorary doctor of science
degree at Rensselaer's eighth annual Honors Convocation Friday,
Nov. 2, at 4 p.m. in the Alumni Sports & Recreation Center
(Armory). Colwell will give the keynote address at the event,
which honors students and faculty for their outstanding academic
achievements.
The
2001 Founders Award, the ceremony's highest honor, will be given
to students who have been chosen for "creativity, leadership,
discovery, and the values of pride and responsibility." The
celebration also will honor Class of 2005 Rensselaer Medalists,
students with a 4.0 GPA, graduate student fellowship awardees,
and faculty award winners.
A
reception in the Armory will follow immediately after Honors Convocation.

Dinner
to Benefit the New York City Fire Department Widows and Orphans
Benefit Fund
Rensselaer is inviting the campus and local community to a pasta
dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 17, that will benefit the New York City
Fire Department Widows and Orphans Benefit Fund.
The
dinner of spaghetti and meatballs, bread, salad, and dessert,
will be served 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the McNeil Room of the Rensselaer
Student Union. The cost is $10 per person, $5 for Rensselaer students.
The dinner will include a 50/50 raffle. No registration is required.
The
dinner will support the Troy Fire Fighters Local #86 initiative
to raise money for the fund, created by the New York City Fire
Department for the widows and children of those firefighters who
died as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center. The dinner is sponsored by the Office of the First
Year Experience at Rensselaer in collaboration with Sodexho and

Rensselaer
County Candidates Debate on Campus
The campus is invited to participate in the 2001 Candidate Debates
for the Rensselaer County executive and district attorney seats.
The debate, sponsored by the League of Women Voters, will be on
Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Heffner Alumni House.
For
the Rensselaer County executive position, the debates will be
between Republican Kathy Jimino and Democrat Lynn Ganance. Kenneth
Bruno and Timothy Nugent will debate for the Rensselaer County
district attorney seat.

Symposium
on "Biophysics With Nanotechnology"
A symposium co-organized by Rensselaer, on "BioPhysics With
NanoTechnology," will be held at the University at Albany,
on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 26-27. Details of the agenda can

The
symposium features three sessions: "From DNA to Cells,"
"BioPhotonics," and "MEMS and BioEngineering."
Presentations will be aimed at a broad audience.
In
addition, there will be a public lecture on Friday evening by
Mike Fortun, assistant professor of science and technology studies
at Rensselaer, on "Ethical Implications of Genomics: Learning
From Iceland."
