Veterans Applying to Rensselaer 1. Determine if you should apply as a transfer or first-year student.

The Institute will waive application fees and expedite the application process for veterans. The Division of Enrollment will permit unofficial documents to be used to begin the admissions process. These can include transcripts, test scores, and government documentsofficial documents must be sent to Rensselaer prior to a veteran’s enrollment as a student. 3. Apply for VA Educational Benefits. Once you have applied for your benefits, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility which you will need to submit to Mike Bayer, the School Certifying Official, at bayerm@rpi.edu or (518) 276-6996. For more information on the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon program, visit http://www.gibill.va.gov/ In addition to participating in the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Rensselaer students have received various VA benefits available to them, including the Montgomery GI Bill, the Survivors and Dependents Educational Assistance Program, the Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP), and the Vocational Rehabilitation Program. Rensselaer is committed to providing outstanding educational resources and opportunities for U.S. veterans. Congress passed the Post-9/11 GI Bill to help participants pay for private colleges, public institutions, as well as other educational programs. At Rensselaer, qualified applicants may be able to attend the university at little or no cost. The Post-9/11 GI Bill provides financial support for education and housing to individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after September 10, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. You must have received an honorable discharge to be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill. The level of eligibility (50%-100%) is based on the actual numbers of days on active duty. In addition, under certain circumstances, veterans may transfer some or all of their benefits to eligible dependents. Additional details can be found on the GI Bill Website. Yellow Ribbon Program To help cover any remaining tuition or fee charges not covered by the program’s annual maximum, Rensselaer participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program under which qualified applicants can receive an additional designated scholarship that will be matched by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
