Fuming Zhang
Fuming Zhang

Research Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Education:
Ph.D. Microbiology, University of Leeds, Leeds City, UK, 1997
B. Eng.  Biochemical Engineering, HuaQiao University, China, 1986

Career Highlights:
After eight years of teaching and conducting research in Biochemical Engineering and Fermentation Technology at the Zhejiang University of Technology, Zhang went to the University of Leeds as a Ph.D. student to study in Microbiology. He joined the Linhardt Group at the University of Iowa in 1999, after he worked in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) for one year as a research associate. Zhang moved to Rensselaer with the Linhardt Group in 2003.

Fuming Zhang has published nearly 50 research papers and received several scientific achievement awards in China (such as the Zhejiang Provincial Government Scientific Achievement Award, China, in 1993). He is a member of many professional societies including the American Chemical Society, the Society for Glycobiology, the Society for General Microbiology (UK), and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Research Areas:
The research in Analytical and Structural Biochemistry area focuses on the preparation, purification and characterization of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates. We use a variety of separation methods (HPLC, CE, PAGE, and GPC) to purify these glycoconjugates and determine their structure by both microsequencing techniques and modern spectroscopic methods.

The Biophysical Chemistry studies the kinetics and thermodynamics of protein-carbohydrate or protein-protein interactions. We rely primarily on isothermal titration calorimetry to study interaction thermodynamics and surface plasmon resonance spectrometry to study interaction kinetics. Finally, X-ray crystallography and NMR solution structure is used in conjunction with molecular modeling to examine the molecular contacts in the protein carbohydrate complex.
