Interdisciplinary Studies Access Policy

General Rensselaer Community
(faculty, staff and students)

The Biotech building doors are unlocked from 7:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (i.e., “daylight hours”), and from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on selected evenings for events or club activities. During these hours, the atrium and other common areas are open to the entire Rensselaer community. The building is locked all day during Institute holidays.

Most office hallways (with certain exceptions) will be unlocked from 8:30 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. and will be accessible to the entire Rensselaer community. Certain office areas and meeting rooms (especially on Floors 3 and 4) require card access at all times. Permanent or temporary card access, or an escort, can be obtained from Nancy Roberts of CBIS administration (robern2@rpi.edu or 276-4259). The approval of the Associate Director or Director may be required.

Non-Biotech residents who require regular access to Biotech

Members of the Rensselaer Community may need repeated access to locations within the Biotech building for a number of reasons.

These include: active ongoing projects or collaborations with CBIS faculty or CBIS staff members. Please contact Nancy Roberts of CBIS administration (robern2@rpi.edu or 276-4259) to obtain this access. A current Rensselaer identification card (capable of access coding) will be required and access will be limited to selected areas of the Biotech building, as designated below, i.e., access authorization levels A (most restricted) through J (least restricted).

All access authorization decisions will be determined by the Associate Director or the Director.

J: Access to building atrium and common areas, during evening hours.

Authorized entry: CBIS residents and external visitors who are attending meetings in Biotech

I: Secure office hallways.

Authorized entry: CBIS residents and external visitors who are attending meetings located within these areas.

H: Conference rooms in office areas.

Authorized entry: CBIS residents and external visitors who are attending meetings located within these areas.

G: Hotel office spaces.

Authorized entry: individuals that have been assigned the use of specific hotel office spaces.

F: Research Core lab spaces.

Authorized entry: members of specific Research Cores or heavy Core users.

  • Appropriate training and the approval of the relevant Core Director(s) must be obtained.
  • Appropriate safety clothing and eye protection are required during Core use.

E: Lab hallways leading to Oxbridge Rooms.

Authorized entry: CBIS residents, hotel space users and others with specific needs.

  • Appropriate laboratory training may be required.

D: Hotel laboratory spaces

Authorized entry: Hotel users others with specific needs.

  • Appropriate training must be completed.
  • Appropriate safety clothing and eye protection are required during Hotel lab use.

C: Selected equipment rooms and wet laboratory spaces.

Authorized entry: CBIS residents, hotel users and others with specific needs

  • Appropriate training must be completed.
  • Appropriate safety clothing and eye protection are required during use of these areas.

B: BioResearch Core facilities

Authorized entry: CBIS members with specific needs.

  • Appropriate training, including IACUC training, must be completed.
  • Appropriate safety clothing and eye protection are required during use of these areas.
  • Other policies, involving pet ownership and prior visits to external animal sale or research sites, may be considered before access is granted.

A: Construction areas

Authorized entry: CBIS members, other Rensselaer employees and authorized contractors with specific needs.

  • Appropriate training may be required.
  • Appropriate safety clothing (including hard hat) and eye protection may be required within these areas.

Note: all areas of CBIS are accessible, 24/7, to senior members of RPI administration, Public Safety personnel and Troy Fire and Police personnel.

Note: Laboratory training, biosafety training and IACUC training are available online to all Rensselaer employees on-line (“Traincaster”). Students and external visitors may access Traincaster by contacting Nancy Roberts.
