Faculty and Staff Donor Reception

Remarks by
Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D.
President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Russell Sage Dining Hall
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York

Friday, May 10, 2013

Good morning.  I am delighted to begin my day with you.

Today, we come together to thank you for your philanthropy and overall generosity to Rensselaer. Throughout the year, you—our faculty, staff, and retirees—dedicate your talents, knowledge, energy, and passion to Rensselaer.  In making the choice to financially support the Institute, you help to build our community and to strengthen our culture of philanthropy. We understand, appreciate, and celebrate this.

As faculty and staff, you help us to realize our primary mission—to provide our young people with an education of undisputed intellectual rigor, that opens a world of opportunity for them. Whatever your position may be, each of you plays an important role in educating our future leaders, in solving Global Challenges, and in building the community that is Rensselaer.

All of our work is important, whether it is the guidance and support provided through teaching, the work done to keep our campus a beautiful place for living and learning, or the advice and counsel provided to our students as they make what are sometimes difficult choices about their futures.

These acts of dedication, of pride in the Institution, and of kindness, make a difference to our students, and help to prepare them for life beyond this campus. They help instill a life-long love of, and connection to, Rensselaer.

This means that you have a firsthand view, and have each played a role, in the transformation that has taken place at Rensselaer over the past twelve years. We are at a key inflection point in the history of this great university. Your ongoing guidance and support will be necessary as we prepare for our bicentennial in 2024. With your continued assistance, as we implement The Rensselaer Plan: 2012-2024, we will shift from transforming Rensselaer to Rensselaer being transformative—in our students’ lives, in our innovative pedagogy, and in the global impact of our research.

Your philanthropy is a vote of confidence in our students and in our mission. By supporting the Institute, you serve as an inspiration and example for other members of our community. I encourage you to speak to your colleagues about why you choose to give to the Institute, in the hope that they will follow your example.

Working together, we will continue to secure bright futures for our students, and hone their abilities to change the world. Your dedication, involvement, and philanthropy help us to realize success that will result in an even more prominent and truly transformative Rensselaer. We are grateful for your support.
