John W. Carr ’77, Esq.

John W. Carr ’77, joined Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP in 1983 and has been engaged in a varied corporate and securities law practice, with a particular concentration in mergers and acquisitions. He was elected a member of the firm in 1990.
Over the years, Carr has represented public and private business organizations and investors in a wide range of domestic and international transactions, including friendly and hostile tender offers, mergers and proxy contests, leveraged buy-outs, public offerings, private placements, bank financing, venture capital financings, and joint ventures. Recently, he has also focused on the organization of private equity funds that pursue both domestic and foreign investment strategies. He is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the American Bar Association, the International Bar Association, and the National Bar Association.
In addition to his law practice, Carr has been involved in several civic and non-profit activities, including serving on the Board of Directors of the New York City Outward Bound Center, and previously the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. In 1992, he served as a fellow in the David Rockefeller Fellows Program of the New York City Partnership. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Upon graduating from Rensselaer with a B.S. in Building Sciences and M.S. in Science in Urban-Environmental Studies, he worked for the Troy Rehabilitation and Improvement Program, Inc., on several local community development programs. He received a joint J.D./MBA degree from Harvard Law School and Harvard Graduate School of Business in 1983.
Carr is a member of the B. F. Greene Society of Patroons of Rensselaer.
