New Book Explores Embodied Cultural Knowledge and Traditional Japanese Dance
September 26, 2007: A new book written by Tomie Hahn, associate professor of art at Rensselaer, uncovers the process and nuances of learning nihon buyo, a traditional Japanese dance form. April 13, 2007: Acclaimed novelist Edward P. Jones will present awards to winners of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s McKinney Contest writing competition on April 18 at 8 p.m. Jones also will read selections from his own work at the event, which is co-sponsored by the New York State Writers Institute. |

Recital by World-Renowned Pianist To Support Architecture Students at Rensselaer
April 9, 2007: In celebration of National Architecture Week, world-renowned classical pianist John Kamitsuka will perform a benefit recital to fund scholarships for architecture students in the Roman Studies Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The special program of Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Schubert will take place April 14 at 7 p.m. at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. |

New Ph.D. Program in Electronic Arts
April 5, 2007: Rensselaer recently garnered approval from the New York State Education Department to offer a doctoral degree in electronic arts. Now one of only a handful of universities in the United States to offer a Ph.D. program in this emerging field, the Institute will begin admitting students in fall 2007. Grounded in theoretical and historical arts research, the Ph.D. in Electronic Arts will meld Rensselaer’s diverse arts offerings — computer music, video, sound arts, performance, and Web-based and installation-based art, among others — with a variety of other disciplinary areas, depending on a student’s particular focus. |

New Degree Program in Games and Simulation Arts & Sciences
March 26, 2007: Rensselaer recently announced the launch of a new undergraduate degree program in Games and Simulation Arts & Sciences (GSAS). The major — which builds off the success of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences’ highly popular game studies minor — will equip graduates with a suite of integrated skills necessary for leaders in the game development industry. |

LRC Presents Fifth Annual Light Art Show
February 27, 2007: Rensselaer’s Lighting Research Center (LRC) held its fifth annual light art show Feb. 27. Called “In the Mind’s Eye,” the show featured 11 graduate students currently enrolled in the LRC’s Lighting Workshop. “There are no constraints,” said LRC Associate Director Russ Leslie ’80 in an interview with the Troy Record. “The students decide what they wish to communicate and then design and make their works of art using the lighting technology and design skills they have acquired at Rensselaer.” |

Rusty Pipes “How I Spent Winter Break” Annual Tour
January 22, 2007: During Rensselaer’s winter break, members of the Rusty Pipes took some time out to hit the road for their annual winter tour. The 14-member a cappella group performed in several Long Island and Connecticut schools from Jan. 8-12. “The annual Winter Tour is a time for the Pipes to sing at numerous high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools,” said Jason Ingraham, a senior majoring in engineering physics and the group’s music director. |
