The first Rensselaer Spirit Day was held on Friday, Feb. 3, in conjunction with Big Red Freakout weekend. Members of the Rensselaer community were encouraged to wear their Rensselaer gear to work, school, or play and show the world their Rensselaer pride.

The Office of Alumni Relations ran a photo competition, asking alumni to share pictures of themselves showing their spirit. Over 40 photos were submitted, coming from all over the U.S. and as far away as China. Several images were group shots from a company, some were family photos, many were individuals, and others included props like dogs, flags, diplomas, Freakout giveaways, even a Zamboni! Participation covered a range of class years, from 1939 to the Class of 2023.

Spirit Day continued on well into the evening at locations around the country, as several regional alumni chapters took advantage of the NBC Sports national broadcast of the RPI vs. Cornell hockey game and hosted viewing parties.

"The response from the campus community was every bit as enthusiastic as from our alumni," said Jeff Schanz, assistant vice president for alumni relations. "Thanks to the Bookstore for providing Spirit Day sales, SEFCU for a special giveaway for those who wore RPI gear, and to all the staff and students who wore red, sent in photos, or otherwise helped to make the day a success!"
