The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has named Einar Larsen ’74 and Mark Pinto ’81 as members. Considered one of the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer, academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology.

Einar Larsen, M.E. ’74, is director of energy applications and system engineering at GE Energy. He was recognized “for the invention and application of flexible AC transmission systems devices leading to enhanced performance of the electric power grid.” A fellow of the IEEE, Larsen earned his master’s of engineering from Rensselaer in 1974.

Mark Pinto ’81, executive vice president and general manager of Energy and Environmental Solutions and Display at Applied Materials Inc., was recognized “for contributions to modeling and manufacturing technologies for semiconductor devices.” Pinto joined Applied Materials in 2004 and initiated the company’s efforts in solar and solid-state lighting. A former Bell Labs fellow, he spent 19 years with Bell Laboratories and later Lucent. He is a fellow of the IEEE and 2008 recipient of its J.J. Ebers Award.ces and its Institute of Medicine.
