Joe Mannino ’91, vice president for capital project management at Columbia University, shared news of “an unplanned convergence of Rensselaer alumni on a complicated construction project,” the university’s new interdisciplinary science facility, the Northwest Corner Building. The building connects via pedestrian bridges to adjoining buildings, completing a connected ring of all the physical science and engineering buildings on Columbia’s Morningside campus. Unique challenges of the site included designing a truss system that kept the building “floating” over a four-story gymnasium that remained active throughout construction. Toward the end of the 40-month project, Mannino discovered that the team of the construction manager, Turner Construction, included four alumni. From left, are Ricardo Cantu ’10 (Arch.), Jason Tavarez ’04 (Mech. Eng.), Joe Mannino ’91 (Arch.), Ildar Istarki ’98 (Arch.), and Kristyn Ostrowski ’10 (Civil Eng.).
