Geological Surface Dendrite

Rock Dendrites
Manganese oxide (psilomelane) dendritic structures formed on the surface of quartzite.  These patterns are similar (in principal) to the ones studied by the IDGE.

The Isothermal Dendritic Growth Experiment (IDGE) is a continuing investigation of dendritic solidification processes. The IDGE is a joint effort between Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and NASA's Lewis Research Center. The project is centered on the observation of dendrites growing in the microgravity environment aboard the Space Shuttle's USMP platform.
