Minimum Specifications - Spring 2010

Although we recommend obtaining your laptop through Rensselaer, you do have the option of bringing your own laptop. If you do so, however, note that you will not be able to take advantage of some of the support provided to Mobile Computing Program participants. You must purchase and install software and configure network connections. You may also encounter software or other incompatibilities, and you may not be eligible for on-campus support and repair or a loaner machine. Be sure to check with your curriculum adviser for software requirements.

The Spring 2010 Mobile Computing Package includes the ThinkPad W500, a comprehensive software suite, a backpack carrying case, an Ethernet cable, a security cable with lock, and an iClicker classroom personal response device. The pre-loaded software suite included with the Mobile Computing Package is not available for sale independently of the package. Individual software programs are available for purchase through the Campus Computer Store.

If an incoming freshmen brings their own laptop, it must meet the following minimum requirements:

Hardware

  • Processor at 2.5 GHz
  • 3GB RAM
  • 160GB internal hard drive
  • 15.4" SXGA active matrix display
  • CD-RW/DVD drive
  • 10/100/1000 on-board Ethernet network connectivity
  • 256MB video memory
  • 802.11a/b/g wireless capability
  • Full complement of ports: USB, parallel, keyboard/mouse, microphone in, speaker/headphone

Software

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2007

Depending on your courses, other software may be required. For example, the Maplesoft Maple symbolic algebra program might be required for Calculus, and you might also need Microsoft Visual Professional Edition, depending on your major.

Software can be purchased at educational discounts through the Campus Computer Store.
