Acquiring Your Laptop - Fall 2013

The Mobile Computing Program is committed to offering a quality complete package at the absolute best possible price. We think that once you consider everything you get along with the laptop, you'll agree that this package is an excellent value!

The details of the 2013-14 Mobile Computing Program are not complete at this time, but we do expect the cost of the Fall 2013 package to be close to that of the Fall 2012 package price of $1,599. We also want to stress that you don't just get a laptop when you participate in this program.....you get a fully-supported complete package which includes the following:

  • A Lenovo ThinkPad laptop
  • 49-month manufacturer's warranty and accidental damage coverage
  • A pre-installed software suite
  • Loaner laptops for program participants
  • Full on-campus hardware and software support
  • Wired and wireless campus Internet connections

Basically, you can let us take care of the computing issues so you can concentrate on your academic program!

Just to give you an idea of what you can expect to receive as a participant in the Mobile Computing Program, here's what we offered in the Fall 2012-13 laptop package, for a price of $1,599:

  • A Lenovo T430 laptop with Intel i5 processor, 8GB RAM, a 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, NVIDIA Optimus graphics, a backlit keyboard, USB2 and USB3 ports, and a web camera
  • A specially designed Kelty laptop backpack carrying case (a $59 value)
  • A 10-foot Ethernet cable (a $10 value)
  • A security cable and lock (a $7 value)
  • An iClicker classroom personal response unit (a $32 value)
  • A pre-installed software suite; a list of the software follows
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise, which has an approximate $100 upgrade price from the Home Premium edition. Mobile Computing Program participants are also entitled to free Windows OS and Office upgrades for as long as they're registered at Rensselaer!
  • Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, which has an approximate $200 price from the Office Home 2010 edition
  • Microsoft Visual Studio software (a $119 value)
  • A forty-nine month manufacturer's warranty and protection against accidental damage, which may cost up to $399 for some laptops
  • Full on-campus consulting and Lenovo-certified repair services
  • A laptop loaner pool, which allows any student participating in the Mobile Computing Program to use an identical laptop system, free of charge, while their original machine is in the repair shop

The laptop's pre-installed software image included:

  • Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise (64-bit)
  • Microsoft Office Professional 2010 (32-bit; 64-bit available for user installation)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2010
  • Microsoft Forefront anti-virus software suite
  • Maplesoft Maple symbolic algebra program (64-bit)
  • MathWorks MATLAB (64-bit)
  • National Instruments LabVIEW (32-bit; 64-bit available for user installation)
  • Siemens NX CAD package (64-bit)
  • Bentley Microstation (32-bit)

  • And as if all this isn't enough, because all Rensselaer students are required to have a laptop and this is an academic program, no 8% sales tax is applied to the cost of the package, so you save even more! Quite literally, you're ready to go from the minute you take your new laptop out of the box.

Students who have notified Rensselaer that they will be coming to campus for the Fall 2013 semester will receive full program details and ordering information in the mail in late June. In the meantime, please feel free to check the Mobile Computing website at http://www.rpi.edu/laptops from time to time for the latest updates.
