Important new information regarding Windows 7

Students who currently have a W500, T61p, T61, or T60 laptop under Rensselaer's Mobile Computing Program can now re-image their laptop with a 32-bit version of the Windows 7 operating system. A full image and a base image are available.

The base image contains:

  • Windows 7 32-bit, Enterprise edition
  • Windows Office 2007
  • Symantec Endpoint Protection (anti-virus)
  • Adobe Elements (Contribute, Premiere, Photoshop, Soundbooth, and Acrobat)
  • WinDVD and Roxio Creator
  • ThinkVantage utilities
  • RCS files

The full image includes the base image software plus:

  • Maplesoft Maple symbolic algebra program
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Professional
  • MathWorks MATLAB
  • National Instruments LabVIEW
  • NX6 (Unigraphics) CAD package
  • MapInfo Professional
  • Bentley Microstation
  • Cygwin
  • Other software

A 64-bit Windows 7 base image will be available on March 1, 2010 for the W500, T61p, and T61. The 64-bit Windows 7 base image will include:

  • Windows 7 64-bit, Enterprise edition
  • Windows Office 2007
  • Maplesoft Maple symbolic algebra program
  • MathWorks MATLAB
  • National Instruments LabVIEW
  • NX6 (Unigraphics) CAD package

32-bit Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade media, which checks for a legal copy of Windows installed on your computer, is available to students participating in the Mobile Computing Program through the Rensselaer Campus Computer Store for $20. You can use this upgrade media to do a recommended "clean" install of Windows 7; for a "clean" install, back up your files to external media, reformat the hard disk, install Windows 7, and re-install your applications.
