The Rensselaer IDEA: Harnessing the Power of Data to Change the World

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute today announced a new university-wide initiative to tackle the challenges and opportunities of Big Data. The new Rensselaer Institute for Data Exploration and Applications (IDEA) brings together and fortifies the wealth of data science, high performance computing, predictive analytics, data visualization, and cognitive computing research at Rensselaer, the nation’s oldest technological research university.

GNS Healthcare Expands Membership at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Supercomputing Center To Advance Big Data Healthcare Solutions

Leading “big data” analytics firm GNS Healthcare has signed a multi-year agreement to extend and expand its membership with the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The agreement enables GNS to continue and grow its use of CCNI’s massively parallel computational resources to directly support its research and operations.

NYSERDA Awards $1.8 Million to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute To Boost Efficiency of Supercomputing Center

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced $1.8 million in funding to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for critical upgrades to the electrical and mechanical infrastructure of the university’s supercomputing center, the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations (CCNI). NYSERDA and Rensselaer officials met at the supercomputing center today to announce the funding.

These upgrades to CCNI’s power and cooling infrastructure support the operation of the center’s high performance computers. Rensselaer recently transitioned its supercomputing research activities to a powerful IBM Blue Gene/Q supercomputer system, which is four times faster and uses half the amount of energy as its predecessor.

First Meeting of New Research Data Alliance March 18 in Sweden Features Leading ‘Big Data’ Experts and Others Working To Make Research Data Easier To Share

Many of the world’s leading experts on “Big Data” and related fields met in Sweden March 18 for the first plenary session of the new international Research Data Alliance (RDA) – an interdisciplinary organization whose goal is to accelerate data-driven innovation through research data sharing and exchange. U.S. involvement was led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Computer Science Professor Francine Berman and Professor Beth A. Plale, of the School of Informatics and Computing at Indiana University.
