Rensselaer Connection

Spring News from the Student Health Center!

This is a busy and exciting time for the Student Health Center campus wide initiatives. In spring, our comprehensive and consistent messages around alcohol and other drug use and general wellness get expressed in some very high energy venues.

On Valentines Day, February 14, we celebrate wellness in shades of pink and red! The DCC Great Hall will be converted into a festive walkway, with balloons, candy, popcorn, give aways and music as we host our annual Health Fair! From information only, to a blood pressure clinic, to chair massages, to alcohol and other drug resources, to volunteer opportunities in the health field, our Health Fair provides opportunities for students, faculty and staff to become more aware of total health: mind, body and spirit. Approximately 40 community and campus resources will be represented. While the immediate goal of the day is fun and fancy, our overarching goal is to increase awareness of health issues as well as the many resources available to assist our students in achieving and maintaining high-level wellness while at Rensselaer and beyond. Since we are celebrating National Condom Week, Valentine's Day and total wellness, your student will not only be able to sample healthy foods, but also be able to win fun prizes and lots of chocolate! The whole campus enjoys the Health Fair; it helps us all become more conscientious consumers of health care in a highly spirited and fun filled atmosphere.

On Monday, February 26, 2007, we bring nationally recognized speaker, Mike Green to campus. 'Greeny', an NCAA athlete and football coach, presents college life and Spring Break, in terms of safety around alcohol and other drugs. He clearly and colorfully shares his own recovery and empowers students to make their spring break fun… and safe. This event will be advertised to all students, RA's and Greek houses. It will be held in DCC 308 at 7 pm. Remind your student about this program. The powerful message could save a life.

Relay for LifeThe final major campus initiative this spring is Rensselaer's Relay for Life. Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society. Last year we not only raised $125,000 but had the experience of our lives. This overnight event honoring those living with and having died of cancer is an incredible snapshot of students working together, playing together and helping others in a totally unselfish and collaborative way. This alcohol and tobacco free event supports Rensselaer's consistent message by providing a powerful opportunity to see that chemicals are not necessary to enjoy an evening of fun, entertainment and laughs. If you are a survivor or would like to be involved, please let your son or daughter know. Our goals this year include bringing at least 40 survivors to the evening and more than 1000 students, faculty or staff to spend the night. What a fabulous event! Plan to join us Friday, April 27th as we light up the evening with HOPE…
