Roommate Connections

roommatesThe first year in college is bound to be a time of change and growth for your student. For many students, this is the first time they have had to share their room with someone else. We thought we would share some tips on learning to live with a roommate.

» Living with someone is more than just material things. Respect, tact, communication, and flexibility all work into a successful mix.

» Sharing a room requires flexibility and consideration. Some of the areas that require compromise are the room, belongings, the phone, the alarm clock, and guests.

» Sometimes roommates need to agree to disagree. This means that it is okay to stand up for themselves without putting the other roommate down. It is all about respecting one another's right to expression.

» It is important to discuss not only what the roommates have in common, but what differences they have. "Peeling away" these layers will help them to better appreciate and understand each other.

The RAs and professional staff are available to all students to discuss roommate issues, help your student to problem solve the situation, or to intervene if necessary. Please encourage your student to seek out our staff if they need assistance or have questions.
