Damages to the Residence Halls: What Happens and How to Prevent It
You have probably made countless trips to every store imaginable to stock your student's room full of supplies and necessities. They have everything they need, but are they ready to live as responsible community members?
Each year we have several thousands of dollars in damage caused to our residence halls. Some are accidental, but many are intentional or careless acts of a few individuals that impact the lives of many others. Damages range from severe (badly damaged/broken furniture, severe structural damage to walls) to minor (paint patches torn by tape, stickers left on doors). All of them cost money to replace or repair, and those costs could be charged to your student if they are not careful to avoid damages during the year.
Please encourage your student to thoroughly check/complete the room condition report at the beginning of the year, as that is the tool used at the end of the semester or year to assess damages. Also remind your student to read through all of the policies, specifically the ones dealing with damages, so they are aware of acceptable behavior in residence and on campus.
