Smart Lighting

The high efficiency of solid-state sources already provides energy savings and environmental benefits in a number of applications. However, solid-state sources offer more: controllability of their spectral power distribution, spatial distribution, color temperature, temporal modulation, and polarization properties. Such smart light sources can adjust to specific environments and requirements, a property that could result in tremendous benefits in lighting, automobiles, transportation, communication, agriculture, and medicine-technology, display, energy, and environment, thereby providing a profoundly positive effect on economic competitiveness, the environment, and quality of life. We are currently investigating topics including polarization light sources for display, automobiles, and bio-imaging, circadian light sources, and optical communication by temporal modulations of smart light sources, etc.
