Communication from POC:
Summer 2009 Registration Period - 3/27-4/24
Degree-seeking Students
Sent on 3/27/09

Dear Degree-Seeking Student:

The Summer 2009 online registration period will begin on Friday, March 27, 2009 and end on Friday, April 24, 2009 . During the registration period, all active, matriculated students will be able to register themselves for Summer courses via the Student Information System (SIS). Please go to https://sis.rpi.edu/rss/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin for log-in instructions. Once the period ends, all registrations must go through our Office.

To assist you with your course selection and registration, we have created a page on our website, http://www.rpi.edu/ewp/distance/registration/index.html, that should provide you with pertinent semester-specific information.

You will find the following links particularly useful:

Plan of Study: Please note that all students should have a Plan of Study on file at this point. We are strongly committed to supporting our current students and knowing your intentions in advance will assist us as we plan for the future and better assess your needs. If you do not have an approved and up-to-date Plan of Study on file, please submit one as soon as possible. I cannot emphasize the importance of a POS enough.  For one, you will not be able to graduate without one. For two, no student should be taking courses blindly and without the direction of their Department. Your educational plans need to be approved by your Department. As long as your Department has approved your POS, you will be granted degree clearance upon successfully completing the courses listed. In addition, we use students’ plans when  planning our course schedule. A low enrollment projection may result in the cancellation of a class. It is therefore imperative that all students have a plan of study on file. Plan of Study templates can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/ewp/distance/downloads/download_forms.html. Please note that all Plans need to be signed by you, the student, before it is forwarded to your Advisor.

Independent Study: Any student planning to register for an Independent Study this Summer needs to submit an Independent Study form. We need to know the faculty who you will be working with, the course title, and the number of credits. This needs to be approved by the faculty member before we can register you. Independent Study forms can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/srfs/independent_study.pdf. Please complete the form and fax to 518.276.8026. Our office will then forward it to the faculty member for their signature/approval.

Summer 2009 Graduates
: Please be aware of the following requirements:

  • You must be registered at RPI. If you are transferring your last course, or if you are completing a course from an earlier semester, you must be registered for a non-credit administrative course. For those needing to register for a “degree completion/final registration” course, please contact me at rower@rpi.edu.  All graduates need to be registered the semester for which they are graduating. If you are registered for a course at Rensselaer, you will not need to register for the non-credit administrative course.
  • You must have an approved and accurate Plan of Study (POS) on file. An approved Plan of Study is one that has your signature as well as your advisor’s signature. It must reflect EXACTLY how you completed your requirements (i.e. correct course numbers and titles). If you need to revise your plan, please submit a new (signed) one and make sure that there aren’t any cross outs. You cannot graduate without an approved and accurate Plan of study on file.
  • You must submit a DEGREE APPLICATION. You must submit a degree application by Friday, June 12, 2009. The link can be found at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/srfs/degreeAppWithMajorCodes.pdf. Please fax to us at (518) 276-8026 and not to the number on the form. We will review it for errors and then forward it to the Registrar’s Office. A copy will be kept in your file as well.

You should also be aware of the following:

  • You can access the Library's website at http://library.rpi.edu/setup.do. As an off-campus user, you will need your Library PIN. Please go to http://library.rpi.edu/update.do?artcenterkey=204 to access information on obtaining your PIN. You will need this PIN to access the library databases, e-journals and e-books. Faculty who teach courses that originate from the Hartford's campus may utilize the Cole (Hartford) Library as their main source of articles, journals, etc. With that being said, it is always best to set up access to both sources. Access to the Folsom (Troy) Library can be done via the Library link provided above. Please go to http://www.ewp.rpi.edu/hartford/library/ to access the Cole Library. You will need your RH Network username as well as the password. Please go to http://www.ewp.rpi.edu/hartford/tis/forms/help.html and request your Network username and password. Be sure to include your RIN. Please note that not all faculty will utilize the Libraries, nor will all Hartford faculty utilize the Hartford Library.
  • Campus cohort students are expected to participate in 2-4 class sessions per course each semester. As a reminder, one of the required dates is the first day of class. Please be sure to check for your course(s) start date and begin making plans to attend the first lecture.
  • We have created a web page that will allow you to access mass communications and announcements that have been sent to your RPI email account. You can access the page at http://www.rpi.edu/ewp/distance/registration/comm_poc.html. Course-specific information will not be posted here. You will still need to access your courses’ websites regularly.
  • The 2008-2009 Rensselaer Academic Catalog is available online at http://catalog.rpi.edu/index.php?catoid=5.
  • Any change of address, phone, email address, etc. should be made by you, the student in SIS. We also require that you send a change of information notification email to Mecaila Smith at smithm12@rpi.edu as well.
  • If you are changing your site location from where you were previously, please notify me immediately. It is important that we have the new information as quickly as possible to ensure receipt of all course materials in a timely fashion. Failure to do so may result in material distribution/shipping delays.
  • If your exam liaison (not applicable to all students) has changed or if you need one, please be sure to contact our office as soon as possible.
  • Please be advised that you will not be able to register if there are any financial holds on your account. All financial issues and outstanding balances must be resolved with the Bursar’s Office as soon as possible so that you are able to register. You can email the Registrar’s Office at registrar@rpi.edu to inquire about any additional (non-financial) holds that you may have.
  • Many of you have been receiving newsletters and notifications from the Career Development Center. As a Rensselaer student, an account will automatically be assigned to you and you will be included on the Career Development Center’s distribution list.  Please go to http://www.rpi.edu/dept/cdc to access their website. Follow the links for Redhawk Joblink student log-in and follow the instructions to use your RIN as both your username and password for initial log-in.  Under the header labeled “profile”, there is a privacy tab and that is where you would opt out of receiving any CDC notifications if you would prefer not to.  Please note that you will not have access to their open job postings or on-campus recruiting activity unless you activate your account. There is a $5 fee associated with this service.

*We encourage all students to register as soon as possible so that they register for courses before the enrollment cap is met and so that the likelihood of a class being cancelled due to low enrollment is unlikely.

We hope that this registration period goes smoothly for you and we look forward to another semester working with you!

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thanks,

Ronnie

Prospective Students
Beginning with the Fall 2008 semester, Rensselaer has begun a three year transition to phase out the delivery of degree and certificate programs via distance learning. Please be assured that all distance students will be able to complete their programs as originally planned, and we will work with each student individually to develop their plan of study or account for any changes to their plan of study resulting from this change. If you have not applied or been accepted these programs are no longer available.
