Communication from POC:
Writing and Electronic Media Contest for Students – sent on 9/08/08

To: Rensselaer Students

From: Merrill Whitburn

Subject: Writing and Electronic Media Contest

Date: September 8, 2008

The writing competition for RPI students--the McKinney Contest--is now open for the 2008-2009 academic year. All students are encouraged to participate. Students from every school won prizes last year.

Prizes will remain at last year's levels. First prizes will be $300; second prizes $175; and third prizes $75. The categories for the competition will remain the same: poetry, essay (class papers acceptable), fiction or drama, and electronic media (including games). The competition includes two divisions, one for undergraduate students, another for graduate students. The due date for entries is March 17, 2009. For competition details, check out the website: http://www.llc.rpi.edu/web/mckinney.

Efforts are again underway to encourage even wider articipation by emphasizing the benefits in addition to prize monies. For instance, having a writing prize on one's resume has been known to increase employment prospects substantially. Writing is a valued capability in the professions.

Another possible benefit is publication in the university's literary magazine, Statler & Waldorf. Last year's winners have been under consideration for publication this year.

We are again trying to attract a noteworthy writer to speak at the awards ceremony in April (We had E. L. Doctorow three years ago, Edward P. Jones two years ago, and Russell Banks last year.). This writer will hand out the prizes to winners--yet another benefit.

Please contact Merrill Whitburn at whitbm@rpi.edu  for additional information.

Prospective Students
Beginning with the Fall 2008 semester, Rensselaer has begun a three year transition to phase out the delivery of degree and certificate programs via distance learning. Please be assured that all distance students will be able to complete their programs as originally planned, and we will work with each student individually to develop their plan of study or account for any changes to their plan of study resulting from this change. If you have not applied or been accepted these programs are no longer available.
