Student Stories Distance Learning
"At first I was doubtful
as to whether or not I could learn in such an (videostream)
environment: however, what really stood out was the numerous
ways in which my experience as a Rensselaer distance learning
student surpassed my previous on-site student experiences
at other academic institutions.
In sum, the whole experience
promotes independent learning, collaboration at a distance
and an exploration of the strengths and weaknesses of the
technology used in the delivery of the lecture.
My thanks and congratulations
to all involved on providing such a stellar experience to
those of us who could not otherwise benefit from RPI's programs."
- Patrick McCormack
"I wish to express my
appreciation for the excellent learning experience I have
had at RPI.
As a result of your excellent
program, the Enterprise Information Systems organization
of Lockheed Martin has just offered me a Systems Engineering
position of Test Director for a highly visible e-Commerce
company initiative.
Without Rensselaer distance learning program, it would have
been impossible for me to pursue a Master's degree because
I commute daily to a full-time job 60 miles from home and
also have 4 boys (and a husband) to raise.
Thank you for a tremendous
and, sometimes technically challenging, education."
- Deborah Neil Palmer
"On behalf of other students
that may not realize it yet, I want to let you know how
refreshing it was to have the class parallel the real-world
so closely. So often we end up learning the "Text Book"
method in a class, and the "Real World" method
at work. This wasn't the case this semester.
I'm speaking from the many
hats I've worn in my 10 years in the industry as a Query
Writer, DB App Developer and DBA. I'm in the middle of a
HUGE Warehouse project at IBM right now and all of the material
you went over applies directly to what our teams are doing.
Although I came into the class
with a lot of this knowledge in my back pocket, a lot of
blanks were filled in for me. Again, thanks for all the
information!"
- John T. Federico
"Hello! My name is Erin
Jones. I started with the Rensselaer distance learning program
in the Fall of 1995. At the time, I was working as an engineer
and foreman at Delphi Interior in Vandalia, Ohio. My husband
was transferred to New Orleans with his company, Procter
and Gamble and I still had four classes to go. I then had
to decide if I should finish my degree or just stop since
I would no longer be employed at Delphi.
My husband and I talked about
what we wanted to do and we both decided that finishing
my degree would be a benefit for both of us. Bill Miller,
the Rensselaer distance learning coordinator at Delphi,
then got me in touch with a Rensselaer Student Services
Administrator (SSA) to go over what I would need to do since
I was now an individual finishing my degree. I just wanted
to let you know that the SSA has been a wonderful asset
to me over the past two years.
The SSA made her self available
through e-mails and telephone calls and always answered
all of my questions immediately. She helped me by making
sure I always had the necessary paperwork and the right
classes to finish my degree. She has been a source of inspiration
for me and has been there every step of the way to make
sure I would finish this degree. I was happy to have her
working with me."
- Erin Jones
"Thank you for all your
help. I am truly impressed by the response time and the
willingness of everyone that I have dealt with at Rensselaer
to help. Thanks again."
- John P. McNeil
"I am a part-time graduate
student. I work full time and have 2 children. Consequently,
juggling graduate school has been a challenge. The ability
to watch class over the internet has been a tremendous help
to me. This convenience allows me to watch all or part of
a class anytime.
I am a very satisfied customer; keep up the innovations
and good work!!!"
- Don Nicoll
"I see it as a way of complementing
and enhancing my work here, and improving the projects I
handle."
- Tom Burns
