Description
The course provides a comprehensive framework for managing product
innovation and the related new product development (NPD) process.
Product innovation involves the conceptualization, design, development,
validation, and commercialization of new products and processes
that provide superior solutions to the needs and expectations
of customers, stakeholders, and society.
Prerequisites
Access to a computer with CD ROM and Internet access. No specific
prerequisites are required. Students will need to use Excel for
use with financial spreadsheets as part of the course project.

Format Classes: Modules over 13 weeks
The course requirements are participation in discussion board, individual empathic design assignments and the preparation of a team-based NPD plan.
For the NPD project, students will self-select a team (3 to 5 students) and develop a conceptual NPD plan for a product or service using the templates found on course web site
Grading
Discussion Board/Participation: 20%
Team Project Milestones – 4 (20% each)
Computing
E-mail and World Wide Web access required for course communications, use of Rensselaer's Learning Management System (RPILMS), and printing of course notes.
Access to Blackboard, Rensselaer's Learning Management tool, is required. Please refer to this page for instructions on how to set up your computer for Blackboard.
