Design Optimization Theory and Practice
Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering

Description
The course introduces the student to the theory and use of numerical design optimization methods, with a major focus on the algorithms and problem formulations relevant to engineering design. The lectures concentrate on the algorithm development while the exercises emphasize correct problem formulation and evaluation of the results. Multi-objective Optimization is also introduced. An overall practical and pragmatic perspective guides the course’s philosophy. Topics to be covered include: methods for unconstrained nonlinear problems, constrained linear and nonlinear problems, sensitivity analysis, physical programming, and practical application and use of optimization.

Prerequisites
Familiarity with basic element of linear algebra will be assumed. Some level of proficiency in computer programming will be useful to the student. Matlab will be used at an elementary level. Knowledge of undergraduate level Calculus is assumed.
