Quality Control and Reliability
Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems - DSES-6230

Description
The primary objectives of this course are to enable students to understand the basic concepts and methods of statistical quality control and reliability engineering and to apply them in manufacturing and other environments for the purpose of quality, reliability, and productivity improvement. Quality control topics include: construction and interpretation of various control charts; specifications, tolerance limits, and process capability assessment; measuring system capacity; special SPC methods, such as CUSUM, short run SPC and EWMA; and acceptance samplings. Reliability topics are: basic concepts of system and component reliability; statistical distributions — such as the exponential, Weibull, and log normal, which are important in the description of life and failure phenomena; and the graphical analysis of complete and censored life-testing and failure data.

Prerequisites
A calculus-based, upper division course in probability and statistics equivalent to Rensselaer’s DSES-6110 Introduction to Applied Statistics course.
