Biology
The Department of Biology is supported
by active faculty research in several focus areas. Biology faculty
researchers are making important contributions in cutting edge
disciplines, recognized by extensive publications in peer-review
journals. Major focus areas of research are biochemistry/biophysics,
microbiology, and ecology. Current and recent research areas include
studies of the human eye, protein modeling of the structure of
nitric oxide synthase, molecular microbial ecology of lakes and
oceans, development of molecular probes for Zebra mussels, studies
of the origins of life, studies of organisms involved in biological
nitrogen fixation, and ecological studies of the effects of acid
rain on watersheds and lakes of the nearby Adirondack Mountains.
